Japan, a monumental stone pagoda tower 300 cm, 120” high, granite, late Meiji to Taisho period, (1910-1926)
The monumental carved stone Buddhist sculptural three layered tower Sanju-no-to fashioned in nine parts with a tall incised five ring finial Hohju representative of five elements known as earth, wind, fire, water, and ethereal space; three sets of hexagonal shaped roofs, and a stepped altar platform all mounted on a four legged base and hand-carved of a granite stone with considerable patina from appropriate age.
Provenance: Old Japanese garden and private collection
Japan’s stone pagodas were the Japanese Buddhist versions of Chinese pagodas and originally Indian stupas. By the Meiji era, the word to came to mean tower and a pagoda’s size was measured in ken, where a ken is the interval between two pillars of a traditional-style building.
Provenance: Old Nagoya garden collection.
This beautifully hand-carved sculpture would make an exceptional visual statement and substantial conversational choice for your special garden location.
All hand-carved. Fine patina from great age.
